Summer in Thredbo – the perfect family holiday!
When the winter snow melts a stunning alpine landscape is revealed. Summer in the Snowy Mountains is truly spectacular with amazing views, alpine wildflowers and a whole host of activities perfect for a summer family holiday.
Thredbo mountain biking
Thredbo is Australia’s premier mountain biking destination with some epic downhill trails to explore. But you don’t have to be an advanced rider to enjoy Thredbo, there are some excellent trails perfectly suited to family riding. The Thredbo Valley Track is a 20km shared user trail ideal for beginners and families undulating through open grasslands and thick eucalyptus forests. Intermediates can try out the Thredbo All Mountain Trail which is a 10km trail accessed by the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift. The more advanced riders can try the infamous Cannonball Downhill trail which tests riders with off-camber roots, rock drops, jumps, wall-ride and other technical features that the gravity specialists dream about. Thredbo also runs mountain biking clinics so you can brush up on your skills. Check out the mountain biking trail map.
Mount Kosciuszko hikes and bushwalking
Visit Thredbo between December and February and you will get to experience the stunning wildflower season. The alpine meadows become ablaze with a range of wildflowers during this time. You can take a guided walk to Mount Kosciuszko to see the wildflowers as well as other spectacular sights along the way like glacial lakes and the headwaters of the Snowy River.
Thredbo also a has a range of self guided hikes so why not pick up a bushwalking trail map from the Boali Lodge reception and head out and explore. There are some shorter walks like the Riverside Walk which would suit smaller legs, while the higher alpine walks, such as the Kosciuszko Summit Walk, can be a little more strenuous, most of them can be usually accomplished by the whole family.
Thredbo summer kids activities
We don’t forget about the kids in summer at Thredbo! There’s so much for them to do like riding the bobsled, disc golf, tennis, swimming in the river or at the Thredbo Leisure Centre pool, plus there’s slide and a floating obstacle course called ‘mission inflatable’. Plus during the school holidays there is the adventure festival. This festival provides so many activities for families to participate in, from movie nights, face painting, slack lining, tree planting and much more.
